The family tried 5E , Lost Mines of Phandelver, but it wasn’t a hit.

so we back to DCC.  Last night we made characters, and tonight I finally get to run the iconic Sailors module.  Hopefully it will be well received.

About 18 years ago I borrowed the Swords Trilogy book(s) from Peter Melman.  I’m just now getting around to reading it.  Although I bought it for the Kindle.  So I’m not even reading the copy that I borrowed all those years ago.  I’m not sure how I will get this book back to Peter.

Anyway it’s good stuff.  It was written before the Elric stuff, and I can see the seeds of Elric and those works in these books.

Nice to be reading again.

Don’t ever loan me anything.

I got some AirPods a couple of months ago and after a couple of months I have completed my evaluation.  I love these things.

Pluses:

  1.  charge super fast.
  2. charge lasts a pretty long time
  3. super convenient.  No wires, and not having to carry phone is amazing.
  4. stay in and feel just like the old EarPods.  Which some like, others don’t.  I do like them.
  5. the charging case holds a good charge.
  6. sound is the same as EarPods.

Minuses:

  1.  $150
  2. software / connecting inconsistent.   Feels a little ‘buggy.’
  3. I liked the volume control on the old wires.  Yes, you can tap the AirPod and Siri will let you tell her to turn it down but that’s a pain.  Or you can turn it down on the phone itself of course.

Last night we finished our DCC campaign.  It ended well – the party summoned a horrible demon into the realm and threw in with him, so the realm is now conquered and oppressed.  And everyone was satisfied.  Geez.

The campaign lasted about 8 months with us playing most Fridays.  It was wonderful having my family at the table, and I think everyone had a good time, even Patti!  The characters made it to level 5, which is pretty impressive for DCC.

Usually I have some kind of music playing.  Last night I played Manilla Road, which was recommended in the DCC G+ community.  It’s 80’s heavy metal, and I must say just as some wines pair well with certain food, this music paired very well with DCC.  Just look at the crazy art on the album cover.  Three of the songs are just fantastic, really amazing, with the others fitting in quite nicely with the edgy nature of DCC.

It appears we will be doing another campaign starting next week.  We are eyeing straight up D&D, and I wonder how they will like it compared to the more flavorful DCC.

So I have a few updates on my 2017 resolution progress.  Some good.  Some not so much.

2.  Control Kickstarter spending.  Only 6 for 2017 will be the goal.

I’m on track here.  I have only funded one so far, How to Write Adventure Modules That Don’t Suck.

At the moment, anything Goodman Games does I’m going all in.  I expect they will have at least 2 more and maybe three more this year.  So they are hogging up half my Kickstarter selections, but I’m good with that.

8.  Read a dozen more books.  One per month.

I’m behind.  I have only read most of one single book; The Handsmaid’s Tale.  Hulu is making an adaption of this.  But I have stalled out and honestly nothing is grabbing me like Appendix N did in 2016.

14.  find creative endeavor……  (I don’t know what this means.  I try things and they go away.  but I must have an outlet and this blog isn’t it)

Ok, so Treknologic is a podcast that I had a big part in creating but left after a year or so due to burnout.  They are going on a hiatus of sorts; so I am stepping in for a year or so while some members get some real life stuff done.  We recorded one episode a week ago or so and it was fun.  I’m rusty; at one point I was pretty good at this but it’s been years and keeping a good flow can be a challenge.  Also I know nothing about microphone technique.

So 2017 is mixed so far.  I’m doing some things right but need to keep some focus on what it is I want to accomplish in 2017.

I’ve become a horrible troll when playing this game.

It’s fun though and today I made it to arena 9!

My wife took this picture of me playing Destiny with my buddy and I really like the image.

First, the game is fun.  But like so many games, it is hard to get it to the table.

So, second, I brought the table!  We had a game before having a round of disc golf.  It was really fun.

Third, I love outside.  It was windy, but was worth enduring to have a nice game before getting some exercise.

I have been doing a good bit of YouTube streaming.

For resolution #7, I am to play more games.  And maybe these Blizzard games are the ones; Overwatch and Heroes.  Overwatch is just so convenient and quick.  10 minutes per game.  Heroes requires a 30 minute investment, but I’m much better at Heroes.

Anyway I have set up YouTube to stream, and this is convenient as it automatically adds my video to my own video library on the channel.   It works pretty damn well!!

2017 resolution #4 is to play more games.  And Saturday morning I did.  I had a round of Imperial Assault and then half a round of X-Wing.

This was a good time.  Often I don’t think about playing games in the mornings, yet I went over to Sean’s house and had a great time.  If I hadn’t I’d have been sitting at home!

In Imperial Assault, I tried out the rancor and Jabba.  The rancor underperformed.  He went down too early, but I think I rushed him in which was a mistake.  Jabba however; he’s kinda expensive at 6 points but I think he may have won the game for me.   For armies with lots of individual models that are cheap he grants one victory point for each one removed.  Those can add up quick.

It was really great and I was glad to get these games to the table.

We continue the descent down to the Center of Aereth in the family campaign.

As I have often stated DCC has been very good to us.  I really like these modules and this campaign is 7 or 8 months old which is really quite good.

The combat is slowing down, however.  This happens in most rpgs as the characters advance and everything grows in hit points.  The solution can be to increase damage and cut hit points of the adversaries.  I will look at this.

My one complaint with DCC continues to be lack of coherent story.  I have tried to weave in my own story, continuing with the goat man introduced in Portal Under the Stars, but the party is not asking about this and to me there is a lack of motivation for the party to journey down or anywhere.

I realize this is touted as a strength, and is a strength for many people.  Keep it simple, keep it episodic.  Old school.
